As families we have
lots of "plans" and "routines" that we use to help our kids
to thrive. Eating a healthy breakfast, participating in sports, helping
with dinner, doing homework and chores- we work hard to create an environment
with structure, as well as a balance of responsibility and
accountability. It is never too soon to start giving children the ability
demonstrate good decision making - but within the safety of healthy
boundaries. Today, children use the internet for education, as well as
for entertainment and fun. Kids today seem to "just know" how
to get around online to find what they want/need. But, have you thought
about how to provide safe and healthy boundaries for your children with regard
to their online/internet experience? There are lots of techie tips and
tricks, software and devices to put your internet on "lockdown."
A quick Google search can give you lots of great advice on how to create a
safer online experience for your family. Hopefully, through your child's
participation in White Ribbon Week they are also able to start a conversation
with you about what it means to be safe online.
To help you as a
parent, to create those safe boundaries, you can install a content filtering
system such as the Router Limits mini network appliance. This little
appliance plugs directly into your router, and then through the online
application, allows you to set the time and content allowed for each
web-enabled device in your home. If you want to pause the internet for
dinner, or only allow X-box for an hour after school - you can do it. If
you want different types of content allowed on your preschooler's computer,
than your teens, than even your own - you can do it. If you want to see
the full, undeletable browsing history of where each device in your home has
been - you can do it. This tool can help you to not just set appropriate
time and content limits for you family - but also lead to great conversations
with your kids on being a responsible consumer of online content, and how to
set limits that support their overall goals.
